5 Ways to Save Money on Home Improvement Projects

PRWeb ran an article on the top 5 ways to save money on home improvement projects.  Here is a summary of the key points:

1.  Plan properly from the beginning.  Determine your budget, prioritize your project(s), make a plan, and stick to it.

2.  Do your research.  If you are contracting out the job, did you seek multiple estimates?  If you are buying materials, did you shop around to multiple stores?  Comparison shopping is a great way to determine whether you are being quoted a competitive price.

3.  Assess the end goal- then try to find less expensive alternatives to achieving the goal.  Inexpensive options such as painting can dramatically change the look of a space.  Keep major structural changes to a minimum, as they are usually very expensive.

4.  How will you pay for it?  Make sure you get the best financing available, whether it be a mortgage refinance, a home equity loan, or something else.  Also, if your goal is to sell the house, focus on projects with a god return on investment.

5.  Should you Do it Yourself?  Labor can comprise 50% or more of the total project cost.  If you do it yourself, you can cut costs- but are you skilled enough to turn out a quality product?  If not, don't take the chance.  Also, don't forget the value of your time.
