Getting Rid of Garbage Disposal Odors

A couple of months ago, I started to notice an odor coming from the kitchen sink drain.  Eventually, I determined that the garbage disposal was causing the problem.  I decided to research a method to eradicate the odor- here's what I did.

First, I tried vinegar and baking soda.  No luck.  Then I tried ice cubes.  Didn't work.  Then I employed a more involved technique.  I cleared out all stuff stuff that was jammed into the cabinet under the sink.

Next, I disconnected the drainage pipe and capped it with a rubber cap that I bought at Home Depot.  This enabled me to soak the disposal with a cleaning solution.

Then, I filled the disposal with warm water and a disposal cleaning solution and let it soak overnight.  I drained it the next day- but the smell wasn't gone.  So I repeated the process with Oxy Clean.

The odor was less noticeable, but it was still there.  At this point I had spent several hours on research and labor (and $20 for cleaning supplies).  I decided that my best bet was to replace the disposal.  I think the cleaning methods are worth trying, but in my case they did not work.

I would recommend trying Spring Again garbage disposal cleaner. I had the same problem with my disposal and I found this product at Target. It worked amazingly well and it’s easy to use.

Trey,

Thanks for the recommendation. I had not heard of that product. It sounds like the best way to keep the disposal clean is to use it regularly. Our disposal is under the side of the sink that is rarely used. In fact, we had a drying rack over it for about two years and never ran water through it.
