How to Install a Programmable Thermostat

Okay- what costs about $50, is easy to  install, and pays for itself in energy savings?  Well, I guess a dozen compact fluorescent light bulbs, a couple of programmable light timers, and some window tinting all fit the bill.  However, I'm talking about a programmable thermostat.

This is something that you can install in about 30 minutes, provided that you purchased a model that is compatible with the wiring of your old thermostat.  The first thing to do is to turn off the power to your heating/cooling system.  Next remove the cover of your old thermostat, leaving the wallplate and wires attached.  Count the number of wires coming out of the wall and attached to your old thermostat (do not count any wires that are attached to a terminal labeled "C" or "C1").  Go and purchase a model that is compatible the the number of wires that you counted.

Back to the installation- Disconnect the wires from your old thermostat one by one, labeling them with the name of the terminal where each was attached (e.g., R, Rc, G, Y, W).  Next, install and mount the backplate of the new thermostat.  Use a level.  Then, connect the wires to the corresponding terminals on the new thermostat.  Finally, install the batteries and mount the thermostat.

Each type of thermostat is programmed differently, so read the instructions carefully.  That's it!

Note: If your old thermostat has a mercury vial, make sure that you dispose of it properly (contact your local waste management authority for details).
