How to Replace a Garbage Disposal
Since I was unsuccessful at removing the odor in my disposal, I decided to replace the disposal. I went to Home Depot- they had three sub-$100 models in stock. I chose one of those. I don't know what I would do with a $300 disposal unless it turned my food waste into biofuel.
Step 1: Cut the power to the disposal
Step 2: Disconnect the plumbing from the old disposal- the drain pipe and, if applicable, the dishwasher drain tube. Be sure to to place a bowl or bucket underneath to catch the water.
Step 3: Disconnect the old disposal from the bottom of the sink. You may need a screwdriver for leverage.

Step 4: Disconnect the wiring from the old disposal. Turn the disposal over and remove the electrical cover plate. Loosen and disconnect all three wires.

Step 5: If your old and new disposals are the same brand, you may be able to keep the same mount. Otherwise, you will need to remove the mount and flange.
From here on out, refer to the instructions that are included with your new disposal for specific instructions. However, here are the general steps involved:
Step 6: Install flange in sink hole and attach disposal mount. Use about 4 oz. of plumber's putty to roll a 3/4" diameter rope and lay evenly around the sink hole. Insert flange slowly and press firmly. Attach disposal mount to the underside of the flange. Secure tightly. Remove excess plumber's putty from top of flange.
Step 7: Connect new disposal to electrical supply. Connect the black wires, connect the white wires, attach the ground wire to the ground bolt. Replace the electrical cover plate. Note: If your dishwasher drains through your disposal, knockout the drain plug.
Step 8: Mount new disposal. It's heavy. If you have an extra person in the area, one person can lift the disposal to the mount and the other can concentrate on securing the disposal to the mount.
Step 9: Reattach plumbing. Run water through and check for leaks.

Total Time: About 1 hour- assuming there are no leaks.
